Each person with Autism is unique, therefore, therapy looks different for each person who benefits from the support of a speech therapist. Some of the most common ways we can support children with autism are providing AAC to those who are non-speaking, using natural language acquisition (NLA) for those who are gestalt language processors, and providing sensory supports to help maintain a state of regulation to allow easier access to communication. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What speech therapy is NOT for children with Autism who have support needs:

  • Being forced to sit in a chair

  • Being denied sensory supports

  • Being forced to use an AAC device with hand over hand use

  • Pointing at flash cards

  • Being asked tons of WH questions and forced to answer

What speech therapy DOES look like for children with Autism who have support needs:

  • Access to sensory supports (low lighting, fidget toys, movement, etc.)

  • Engaging in child-led play while the SLP uses NLA to promote communication

  • Speech therapist models AAC during the child’s preferred activities

  • Speech therapist models a variety of language concepts during child-led play

  • Speech therapist provides statements with pauses for opportunities for the child to communicate

PLAY is so important for learning and communicating! A state of REGULATION is also extremely important for learning and communicating! We promote natural, stress-free, engaging communication for children with Autism. We follow research-based therapy approaches to best support your child’s communication.

Another note- there is not a wrong way to play. Children should not be forced to play with a toy the “correct” way. All play is great whether it consists of using traditional toys or not. Communication is tough! Not to mention if you are being forced to communicate about something you’re not interested in. Let’s support our young communicators by allowing all play!

Last thing- many if not all children with autism are gestalt language processors. Your child may frequently repeat lines they hear on TV or from other people. We use natural language acquisition to help your child move towards self-generated spontaneous communication!
